Explore the Assarts in winter

Wrap up warm and get your boots on! Get the New Year off to a cracking start by joining the Rockingham Forest Vision team for the first of a series of guided walks in several of the less well-known parts of the forest.
Fineshade Wood, near the Duddington  entrance

For many people the north-east section of Fineshade is unknown and we will explore the areas shown on the OS map as North Spinney and The Assarts.

Have you seen the spectacular swallowholes? Do you know where Assarts Farm used to be?  We will visit a series of little-known ponds, talk about the ancient "holloway", see some of Fineshade's best Elm trees, learn about dormouse monitoring and Forestry England's plans.

On this walk we will be going "off piste", deep into the woodland itself so it is not for the faint-hearted or poorly shod.  There will be brambles and mud - so please come prepared!

The walk will be led by local residents, one of whom's family previously farmed the Assarts.

Distance: 4-5 miles (Roughly 2.5 miles for the walk itself plus 1 mile each way from Top Lodge or 3/4 mile each way from Duddington.)

The guided part of the walk will start on the bridleway leading up from Duddington so if you want to save a bit of a walk from the Top Lodge car park (£6 parking fee), you may prefer to park  in Duddington and walk up the bridleway.

Full directions to the start of the walk when you book.

Please let us know if you want to come.
We will confirm full details two days before the walk.
