Explore the Assarts in late winter
Wrap up warm and get your boots on! Join the Rockingham Forest Vision team for the last of a series of guided winter walks in some of the less well-known parts of the forest.
Fineshade Wood, Duddington entrance
Saturday 26th March
10:00 - 12:00
Sorry, fully booked! Do email for a place on the waiting list
For many people the north-east section of Fineshade is unknown and we will explore the areas shown on the OS map as North Spinney and The Assarts.
Have you seen the spectacular swallowholes? Do you know where Assarts Farm used to be? We will visit a series of little-known ponds, talk about the ancient "holloway", see some of Fineshade's best Elm trees, learn about dormouse monitoring and Forestry England's plans. The wild garlic and bluebells will be coming up, though probably not yet in flower.
The walk will be led by local residents, one of whom's family previously farmed the Assarts.
Distance: 4 miles. On this walk we will be going "off piste", deep into the woodland itself so it is not for the faint-hearted or poorly shod. There will be brambles and mud - so please come prepared!
The walk will start beside Duddington Cemetery alongside the A43. An ancient bridleway leads up into the woods.
Full directions to the start of the walk when you book.
